Opening reception for exhibit curated by Martha Bird
This exhibit (Sept. 25 – Dec. 15) started as a project when the Minnesota Historical Society acquired two baskets of artist Martha Bird earlier this year. To highlight the acquisition, Martha was invited to engage in curating a show that pairs and explores objects from the museum’s collection with her baskets. The result is a display that creates conversation connecting wellness, community and art.
The heart of the exhibit highlights the relationship between creativity and resilience. Elements of Martha’s life are weaved into each display case, which connect to her life as an artist, her work as a nurse, and her personal experience living with Post Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD). The intention is to bridge the past with the present and highlight the vitality of the human spirit when confronted with challenges. Special thanks to Jes Reyes of Avivo ArtWorks for her curatorial assistance during the development and execution of this project.
