Before closing its doors at the end of September, VSA Minnesota, a “one-stop shop for arts access,” will share arts access and disability awareness information at free workshops in five cities. Join Executive Director Craig Dunn from 1:00 to 4:00 PM to learn and to ask your questions about accommodations for people with disabilities, disability etiquette and emerging trends in the field of arts access. Electronic resource lists, internet links and suggested contacts will be provided along with refreshments. The sessions target arts administrators, board members and anyone interested in access to the arts for people with disabilities. See below to register.
These workshops are made possible by a Minnesota State Arts Board services grant to assist VSA Minnesota in transferring its organizational knowledge to the Minnesota arts community.

Tuesday, August 20: Grand Rapids at the Reif Arts Center, 720 NW Conifer Drive.

Performed by students with special needs and their mentors
Northern Starz Children’s Theatre is the first Minnesota national replication site for THE PENGUIN PROJECT, a program that empowers children with special needs through theatre. Northern Starz’ second Penguin Project Performance, Disney’s Aladdin JR. is based on the 1992 film and the 2014 Broadway show about the “diamond in the rough” street rat who learns that his true worth lies deep within. Aladdin and his three friends are down on their luck until he discovers a magic lamp and the Genie with power to grant three wishes. Wanting to earn the respect of the princess, Aladdin embarks on an adventure that will test his will and his moral character. All roles are filled by young artists with developmental disabilities including Down syndrome, cerebral palsy, autism, intellectual disabilities, learning disabilities visual impairment, hearing impairment, and other neurological disorders. They are joined on stage by dedicated “peer mentors” – children the same age without disabilities who have volunteered to work side-by-side with them through four months of rehearsals and through the final performance.
